Need to check if a UPS tracking number is valid? Use our instant validator above to verify the format and checksum of any UPS package ID.

How to Verify a UPS Tracking Number

To confirm a tracking number is legitimate before shipping or receiving, follow these steps:

  1. Check the Length: Standard UPS numbers are either 9, 10, 12, or 18 characters long.
  2. Verify the Prefix: Most modern UPS shipments start with 1Z. Older or freight shipments may start with H, V, or be purely numeric.
  3. Validate the Checksum: The last digit of a "1Z" number is a mathematical check. If it doesn't match the preceding characters, the number is definitely a typo or fake.
  4. Check the Service Code: The 9th and 10th characters (after the "1Z" and 6-character shipper ID) indicate the service level (e.g., 03 for Ground).

How the UPS "1Z" Checksum Works

The last digit of a 1Z tracking number is a calculated value designed to catch entry errors. Here is how the math works:

  1. Strip the "1Z": Focus only on the remaining 16 characters.
  2. Convert Letters: Letters are assigned values (A=2, B=3, ..., Z=0). Digits keep their face value.
  3. Weighting: Multiply characters in odd positions by 2 and even positions by 1 (or 3, depending on the specific UPS algorithm version).
  4. Modulo Calculation: The sum is divided by 10, and the remainder determines the final check digit.

Note: Manual calculation is complex. Our tool above handles this instantly using the official MOD10 algorithm.

Common Validation Errors

  • Case Sensitivity: Some systems require "1Z" to be uppercase. Lowercase "1z" may return an error.
  • Look-alike Characters: It is easy to confuse 0 (zero) with O (letter), or 1 (one) with I (capital i).
  • Spaces and Dashes: Always remove spaces (e.g., 1Z 662 F41...) before validating.
  • Carrier Mismatch: Ensure you aren't trying to validate a FedEx (12 digits) or USPS (22 digits) number in a UPS field.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a tracking number be fake?

Yes. Scammers often provide numbers that look like the UPS format but fail the checksum validation or don't exist in the actual UPS database. Always verify on the official UPS.com site if our validator confirms the format is correct but no tracking data appears.

Why does my valid number show "No Info"?

UPS numbers are often generated before the package is physically scanned. If your number follows the correct format but shows no data, wait 24 hours for the first scan to hit the system.

How many digits is a UPS tracking number?

The vast majority of UPS numbers are 18 characters starting with "1Z". However, 9, 10, and 12-digit numeric formats are also valid for specific services.
