Why is my package stuck in customs inspection?

It's the most frustrating status update a parcel can have: "Held in Customs" or "Under Customs Inspection." When this happens, there's usually no information about how long it will take, and the tracker doesn't move for days or even weeks.

1. What actually happens during an inspection?

Customs offices handle thousands of packages every day. Most go through automated scanners, and if the digital data (like the HS code and value) matches what the scanner sees, the package moves on.

However, a percentage of packages are pulled for "manual inspection." This could be because:

  • The scanner flagged something suspicious.
  • The documentation is missing or incomplete.
  • It was chosen for a random spot check.

When a package is pulled, a customs officer has to physically open it, compare the contents to the declaration, and sometimes even test the materials. This takes time, especially if the customs office is busy.

2. Why does it take so long?

The main reason is the volume of packages. If a customs hub is backed up (especially during peak times like Christmas), a manual inspection that should take 15 minutes might sit in a queue for five days before an officer even looks at it.

Once the inspection is done, the package has to be re-sealed and handed back to the courier. This handover process can add another 24 to 48 hours to the delay.

3. What are the common "red flags" for customs?

Certain things will almost always cause a delay:

  • Vague descriptions: Using terms like "Gift," "Electronics," or "Samples" without being specific.
  • Under-valuing: Declaring a $500 phone as worth $20. Customs officers know what things cost, and if they think you're lying, they will hold the package until you provide a real receipt.
  • Brand names: High-end brands (like Rolex, Louis Vuitton, or Apple) are often checked to see if they are counterfeit.

4. What can I do to speed things up?

Unfortunately, once a package is held for inspection, there is very little you can do to speed it up. Calling customs usually won't help because the agents on the phone can't influence the officers on the floor.

The best thing you can do is wait for the courier to contact you. If customs needs more information (like an invoice or proof of payment), the courier will ask you for it. Provide it as quickly as possible to avoid further delays.

5. How long is "too long"?

In most developed countries, a typical customs inspection takes between 3 and 10 days. If your package has been stuck for more than two weeks without any update or request for information, you should contact the courier to start an inquiry. It's possible the package has been lost or seized without a notification being sent.
