FedEx tracking numbers come in multiple formats depending on the service. Express uses 12 digits, Ground uses 15, SmartPost uses 20, and Freight uses 22. Unlike UPS (which starts with "1Z"), FedEx tracking numbers are purely numeric.

What is a FedEx Tracking Number?

A FedEx tracking number is a unique code assigned to each package. It shows where your shipment is from pickup to delivery. The format varies by service: Express shipments get 12-digit numbers, Ground gets 15 digits, SmartPost gets 20 digits.

Common FedEx Tracking Number Formats

FedEx uses different tracking number lengths for different services. You can often tell what service was used just by counting the digits.

12-Digit Format (FedEx Express)

Most FedEx Express shipments use a 12-digit numeric code. This includes Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day, and International Express.

Example: 123456789012

Express is FedEx's premium service—overnight and 2-day delivery with guaranteed times. If your tracking number is exactly 12 digits, it's almost always Express.

15-Digit Format (FedEx Ground)

FedEx Ground shipments use a 15-digit numeric tracking number. This is the equivalent of UPS Ground—standard shipping that takes 1-7 business days depending on distance.

Example: 123456789012345

Ground is cheaper than Express but slower. A package from California to New York takes 5-6 business days via Ground, versus overnight with Express. Ground doesn't deliver on weekends unless you pay extra for Home Delivery Saturday service.

20-Digit Format (FedEx SmartPost)

FedEx SmartPost uses a 20-digit numeric tracking number. SmartPost is economy shipping where FedEx transports the package to the destination area, then hands it to USPS for final delivery.

Example: 12345678901234567890

SmartPost is the slowest and cheapest option. Delivery takes 2-7 business days after FedEx transfers it to USPS. You'll see two carriers in the tracking: FedEx handles long-distance transport, USPS does the last mile to your door.

22-Digit Format (FedEx Freight)

FedEx Freight shipments use a 22-digit numeric tracking number. This is for palletized freight, LTL (less-than-truckload), and other large commercial shipments.

Example: 1234567890123456789012

Freight tracking works differently than parcel tracking. Updates are less frequent because freight moves on scheduled routes between terminals rather than being individually scanned like small packages.

FedEx vs UPS vs USPS Tracking Numbers

FedEx, UPS, and USPS use completely different tracking formats. Here's how to tell them apart:

FedEx tracking numbers:

  • Purely numeric (no letters)
  • 12, 15, 20, or 22 digits
  • No special prefix
  • Example: 123456789012

UPS tracking numbers:

  • Start with "1Z" (most common)
  • 18 characters with letters and numbers
  • Can also be 9, 10, or 12 digits for legacy services
  • Example: 1Z662F416878787827

USPS tracking numbers:

  • 20-22 digits
  • Start with patterns like 9400, 9205, 9270
  • Sometimes start with letters (EC, CP, LK)
  • Example: 9400128206227943500115

If you have a purely numeric tracking number and don't know the carrier, count the digits. 12 or 15 digits is probably FedEx. 20+ digits could be either FedEx SmartPost or USPS—paste it into both tracking sites to see which one recognizes it.

You can't track a FedEx package on ups.com and vice versa. Each carrier only tracks their own shipments.

How to Track a FedEx Shipment

  1. Go to fedex.com/tracking
  2. Enter your tracking number (no spaces or dashes needed)
  3. Click "Track"

Tracking information is available for 90 days after delivery for Express and Ground. Freight tracking stays in the system for 2 years.

Tracking Without a Number

Track by Reference

If you don't have the tracking number, you can track using a reference number like an order number or invoice number. You'll need:

  • Reference number
  • Shipping date range
  • Destination zip code or country

This only works if the shipper set up reference tracking when creating the label.

Door Tag Number

If FedEx attempted delivery and left a door tag, you can track using the door tag number printed on it. This is useful when the shipper never sent you the original tracking number.

Transportation Control Number (TCN)

Government and military shipments use TCN for tracking instead of standard tracking numbers.

Common Tracking Mistakes

Adding spaces or dashes

FedEx tracking numbers don't have spaces. When you copy from an email that formats it as "1234 5678 9012," remove the spaces before pasting. The system wants continuous digits only.

Confusing similar digits

In some fonts, 0 (zero) and O (letter O) look similar. Same with 1 (one) and I (capital i), or 8 and B. FedEx numbers are purely numeric, so if you see what looks like a letter, it's probably a number you're misreading.

Checking too soon

Retailers generate labels hours before actually dropping packages at FedEx. The tracking number exists but shows "Shipment information sent to FedEx" until FedEx scans it at pickup. Give it 24 hours.

Using the wrong carrier's website

If your tracking number doesn't work on fedex.com, it might not be a FedEx number. Try ups.com or usps.com. Retailers sometimes use multiple carriers and don't always specify which one in their shipping emails.

Not accounting for SmartPost handoff

FedEx SmartPost tracking stops updating once FedEx transfers the package to USPS. The last FedEx scan says "Transferred to USPS" or similar. After that, you need to track it on usps.com using the same 20-digit number.

Expecting weekend delivery

FedEx Ground doesn't deliver on Sundays. Saturday delivery costs extra and only applies to Home Delivery service in residential areas. If your package scanned Friday evening "at destination facility," it won't deliver until Monday unless you paid for Saturday.

International Tracking

International FedEx shipments use the same tracking number formats. Express International is 12 digits, same as domestic Express.

Customs creates gaps in tracking. Your package arrives in the destination country, clears customs (which can take 1-5 days), then shows "clearance complete" and moves to delivery. During customs, tracking might not update for 48-72 hours. This is normal.

Some countries have poor scanning infrastructure. Your package might arrive at the international hub, sit for 2 days with no scans, then suddenly show "out for delivery." This happens in parts of South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Troubleshooting Tracking Issues

"Tracking number not found"

Wait 24 hours after receiving the number. The shipper created a label but might not have dropped the package yet. If it still doesn't work after 24 hours, contact whoever shipped it—they either gave you the wrong number or haven't actually shipped it.

No updates for 3+ days

For domestic Express, this is unusual—call FedEx. For Ground, gaps of 2-3 days can happen on cross-country shipments. For SmartPost, check if it transferred to USPS and you need to track it there instead.

Package shows delivered but you don't have it

Check the tracking details for delivery location. FedEx notes "front door," "side door," "mailroom," "reception," or "left with neighbor." The driver might have left it somewhere you didn't check.

Ask neighbors if they accepted it. Apartment buildings sometimes get packages left with the office or front desk.

Check if someone else in your household signed for it. The proof of delivery shows the signature name if signature was required.

If it's genuinely missing, file a claim within 24 hours. After that, FedEx considers it delivered and claims get harder.

Delivery exception

This means something prevented normal delivery. Common causes:

  • Wrong address
  • Business closed
  • Recipient moved
  • Weather delay
  • Customs hold
  • Damaged package

Click the exception details in tracking. It explains what happened. "Local delivery restriction" often means a gated community where the driver couldn't access. "Incorrect address" means you need to contact the shipper to fix the address before FedEx tries again.

Stuck "in transit"

Ground shipments can sit on a trailer for 48 hours between hub transfers without showing scans. This is normal for cross-country shipping. The package is moving, just not being scanned at every step.

If it's been more than 5 business days with no movement, call FedEx. They can ping the facility to locate it.

FedEx Tracking FAQs

Q: How long does FedEx keep tracking information?
A: 90 days for Express and Ground. 2 years for Freight. After that, the number no longer returns results.

Q: Can I track FedEx with a USPS number?
A: Only for SmartPost. FedEx SmartPost uses a 20-digit number that works on both fedex.com and usps.com because USPS handles final delivery.

Q: Why does my 12-digit number not work?
A: Make sure it's exactly 12 digits with no spaces or letters. If it still doesn't work, you might have a reference number instead of a tracking number, or it's from a different carrier.

Q: Can tracking numbers be fake?
A: Yes. Scammers send fake tracking numbers that look valid but don't exist in FedEx's system. Always verify on fedex.com, not just a third-party tracking site.

Q: What's the difference between FedEx Express and Ground?
A: Express is overnight/2-day delivery with guaranteed times (12-digit tracking). Ground is standard shipping, 1-7 business days depending on distance (15-digit tracking). Express costs 2-4x more than Ground.

Q: Do all packages get tracking numbers?
A: Yes, every FedEx shipment gets a tracking number. Even small envelopes and documents.

Q: Can I redirect a package after it's shipped?
A: Yes, with FedEx Delivery Manager. You can redirect to a FedEx location for pickup, change the delivery address, or schedule a different delivery date. Some shippers block redirects, and there's usually a fee.

Q: Why did my package go to the wrong city?
A: FedEx routes through regional hubs. A package from Miami to Orlando might scan in Memphis because that's the sorting hub. The tracking route doesn't match geography—it matches FedEx's network. This is normal.

Q: What does "tendered to FedEx" mean?
A: The shipper dropped the package at FedEx. It's in FedEx's possession but might not be scanned into the tracking system yet. First real tracking update usually comes when it reaches the hub.

Q: Can FedEx deliver without updating tracking?
A: Rarely, but yes. If a driver's scanner malfunctions or they forget to scan, the package can arrive before tracking shows "delivered." The system usually catches up within a few hours.
