Three names come up most often when shopping for shipping insurance: Shipsurance, Route, and UPS Capital. They're not interchangeable — each serves a different type of user.

Here's how they compare across the dimensions that actually matter.

Who Each Product Is For

Shipsurance — For shippers: businesses, e-commerce sellers, and individuals who ship regularly. You create an account, add coverage to each shipment, and file claims when needed. Works with most major carriers.

Route — For buyers. It's the "Package Protection" checkbox that appears at checkout on thousands of online stores. If the merchant has Route installed, you can add it when you buy. You don't purchase it separately.

UPS Capital (InsureShield) — For UPS-heavy shippers. Coverage integrates directly into your UPS shipping account. If you ship primarily through UPS, it simplifies everything.

Note on Route: Route was acquired by Global-e Online in 2023 and has been in transition. Availability varies by merchant, and some stores that previously offered Route have switched to alternatives like Corso or Redo. If you see package protection at checkout, check which provider it is.

Cost Comparison

Shipsurance~$0.55 per $100~$0.50$10,000 per shipment

UPS Capital~$0.65 per $100~$1.00$70,000 per shipment

On a $500 shipment:

  • Shipsurance: ~$2.75
  • Route: ~$5–10
  • UPS Capital: ~$3.25

Shipsurance wins on price for most use cases.

International Coverage

Shipsurance: Strong international coverage. Works with USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL, and regional carriers. Explicitly covers high-risk routes including China and Southeast Asia — routes that carrier insurance often excludes or handles poorly.

Route: Depends entirely on the merchant. Some stores offer it globally, others are US-only. You have no control over this as a buyer.

UPS Capital: Good for UPS international shipments. Less relevant if you're not using UPS.

Winner for international: Shipsurance.

Claim Speed

Shipsurance: File online, receive payment in 5–10 business days for approved claims. The process is straightforward; customer service responds quickly.

Route: File via the Route app or website. Resolution in 3–7 days for straightforward cases. Consumer-friendly process — designed for non-technical users.

UPS Capital: Handled through UPS, processed by UPS Capital. Takes 10–20 days. More documentation required.

Coverage by Scenario

SituationShipsuranceRouteUPS Capital
Lost in transit
Stolen after delivery (porch piracy)
Damaged in transit
Wrong item delivered
Customs seizure
Delay only

Route covers "wrong item delivered" and theft after delivery — useful for consumer purchases where porch theft is a real concern. Shipsurance is stronger for commercial/commercial-weight shipments.

Setup

Shipsurance: Requires creating an account. First setup takes 15–30 minutes. After that, adding coverage to a shipment takes seconds.

Route: Zero setup for buyers — it's at checkout when the merchant has it. For merchants, it requires a Shopify, WooCommerce, or other e-commerce platform integration.

UPS Capital: Integrated into your UPS account settings. If you're already a UPS business customer, setup is minimal.

Which One to Use

You're a buyer on an online store: Use Route or whatever package protection is available at checkout — it's cheap, fast, and requires no effort. Check which provider it is before assuming it's Route.

You ship packages regularly: Use Shipsurance. Cheaper per $100 than UPS Capital, covers more carriers, and has the most reliable international coverage.

You ship exclusively via UPS at high volume: UPS Capital is worth it for the account integration, even at a slightly higher per-$100 rate.

You ship internationally from China or Southeast Asia: Shipsurance. It's the most explicit about covering these routes.

Bottom Line

For buyers: use whatever protection is offered at checkout — it's inexpensive and the claim process is fast.

For shippers: Shipsurance wins on price and carrier flexibility. UPS Capital wins only if you're already deeply in the UPS ecosystem.
