Most late parcels are not lost. They are stuck at a specific point in the network for a specific reason, and each reason has its own normal duration. Learn to read which one you have, and you will know whether to relax or escalate.

First: is it really delayed?

A parcel is only delayed relative to a promise. Before treating yours as late, check what the promise actually was. Marketplace checkout estimates are sales numbers, not carrier commitments, and even carrier estimates are revised as the parcel moves. The details are in how accurate estimated delivery dates are. If the current estimate has not passed yet, the honest answer is that you are waiting, not delayed.

The five real causes, with their normal durations

Weather and network disruptions

Storms, floods, airport closures, strikes. These show up as an "exception" or "disruption" scan and resolve when the network reopens, typically within days. Nothing you can do helps; the delivery exception guide covers this family.

The label exists but the parcel does not

Tracking shows only an early status for days. The seller has not shipped yet, which is not a carrier delay at all. For this pattern and its dispute deadlines, read what "electronic data received" means.

The line-haul silence

A parcel crossing a country or an ocean produces no scans between departure and arrival. One to two weeks of silence on an international leg is normal; see why parcels get stuck in transit for the full explanation.

Customs

For international parcels this is the biggest single source of delay, especially since the US ended its low-value duty-free threshold in 2025 and the EU has been phasing out its own, so more parcels now need payment processing before they can move. If your tracking mentions customs, go directly to my package is stuck in customs.

Local delivery capacity

The parcel reached your city but the local network is overloaded (peak season, staffing gaps). This usually resolves within a few days. If it flips to "out for delivery" and back repeatedly, that pattern has its own explanation in what "out for delivery" means.

The escalation ladder, with days

When waiting stops being sensible, escalate in this order:

  1. Day of the missed estimate: recheck the full tracking history. Look for exception scans, address problems, or a handover to a partner carrier you have not checked yet.
  2. Three to five working days late (domestic): contact the carrier with the tracking number and ask for the parcel's physical location. Ask them to open a trace if it has not moved.
  3. One to two weeks late (international): contact the carrier, and notify the seller in parallel through the marketplace so the case is on record.
  4. Before the protection deadline: if nothing has resolved, open a dispute or claim with the seller or platform. AliExpress buyer protection runs about 60 days from shipment; eBay cases within 30 days of the estimated delivery; card chargebacks are the fallback. Deadlines are what sellers count on you missing, so calendar them.

When a delay becomes "lost"

There is no universal rule, but a working definition: a domestic parcel with no scan movement for more than two weeks, or an international parcel static for more than about a month after the last scan, has left delay territory. At that point the playbook changes from waiting to claiming, and the steps are in the missing package guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get compensation for a late parcel?

Only if the service carried a money-back delivery guarantee (common on express tiers, rare on economy) and the guarantee was active for your shipment. Marketplace buyer protection is the more practical route when a parcel runs well past its estimate: sellers on major platforms absorb late-delivery claims through the official channel.

Does calling the carrier speed anything up?

A trace request can shake a parcel loose from a mis-routing, which is a real effect. For weather, customs, or backlog delays, calling changes nothing but does document your case, which matters later if you file a claim.

The tracking has not updated in two days. Should I worry?

No. Two days of silence is inside normal scanning rhythm, especially between facilities. The thresholds in the escalation ladder above are the ones worth acting on.

Why is the estimate different on the seller's page and the carrier's page?

The seller's page shows a promise made before your parcel existed; the carrier's page shows a forecast based on actual movement. Trust the carrier's current estimate over the original checkout number every time.
