UPS InfoNotice slip on a door

You get home and there's a yellow sticker on your door instead of your package. That's a UPS InfoNotice, and the number on it works differently than regular tracking numbers. Most people don't know you can use it to redirect deliveries, schedule pickups, or authorize release without calling customer service.

What is a UPS InfoNotice Number?

An InfoNotice number identifies a specific delivery attempt that failed. The driver leaves the slip when nobody's home to sign, the address is inaccessible, or there's some other delivery problem. The number starts with "1R" or "WN" and is 10-15 characters long.

Example: 1R238F9472019 or WN034892K1847

This is not the same as your tracking number. The InfoNotice number is attempt-specific. If the driver tries again tomorrow and you're still not home, you get a different InfoNotice number. Your package tracking number stays the same.

InfoNotice Number Format

InfoNotice numbers follow these patterns:

1R + 13 characters

  • Example: 1R238F9472019
  • Used for signature-required packages
  • Links to a specific delivery attempt

WN + 10-12 characters

  • Example: WN034892K1847
  • "WN" stands for "Will Not deliver"
  • Used for address problems or access issues

The number is printed on the yellow slip along with your tracking number, the reason for the missed delivery, and your options for getting the package.

What You Can Do With an InfoNotice Number

Enter the InfoNotice number at ups.com/infonotice and you get these options:

Authorize Release

Sign the slip or enter the number online to let UPS leave the package without a signature. This only works if the shipper didn't require signature confirmation. If it's Adult Signature Required (code A8), you can't waive it.

Schedule Redelivery

Pick a day when you'll be home. UPS tries again on that day. Free for the first redelivery attempt. Some service levels charge for additional attempts.

Redirect to Another Address

Send it to your work address, a neighbor's house, or a UPS Access Point. Costs $5-10 depending on distance. The shipper can block this if they restricted delivery options when creating the label.

Hold for Pickup at UPS Customer Center

The package goes to the nearest UPS facility and sits there for 5 business days. Bring the InfoNotice slip and your ID. Free option. This works even for Adult Signature packages if you show up with valid ID.

I've used the Customer Center pickup for every Adult Signature package I've received in the last two years. The facility near me is open 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM weekdays and 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturdays. I stop by after work and skip the whole "waiting around for the driver" problem.

InfoNotice vs Tracking Number

InfoNotice NumberTracking Number
Identifies a delivery attemptIdentifies the package
Changes with each attemptStays the same throughout shipping
Starts with 1R or WNUsually starts with 1Z

You need both. The tracking number tells you where your package is. The InfoNotice number lets you change what happens next.

Common InfoNotice Scenarios

Scenario 1: Signature Required, Nobody Home

The driver rings the bell at 2:00 PM. You're at work. He leaves an InfoNotice. You have three options:

  1. Do nothing - he tries again tomorrow at roughly the same time
  2. Authorize release online (if allowed) - he leaves it tomorrow without signature
  3. Hold for pickup - the package goes to the Customer Center after the third attempt

After three failed attempts, the package automatically goes to the Customer Center. You have 5 business days to pick it up before it returns to sender.

Scenario 2: Wrong Address or Inaccessible Location

The address on the label doesn't exist, the building is locked, or the driver can't safely access the delivery point. You get an InfoNotice with "Address Unknown" or "No Access" marked.

Use the InfoNotice number to correct the address or provide delivery instructions. "Leave with building manager in unit 101" or "Use north entrance, south entrance is locked." The driver sees these notes on the next attempt.

Scenario 3: Adult Signature Required

You're home but you're 19 years old. The driver asks for ID, sees you're under 21, and can't complete delivery. He leaves an InfoNotice marked "Adult Signature Required - Recipient Not of Age."

Your options: get someone 21+ to be home for the next attempt, or go to the Customer Center with your ID showing you're 21+ (if you are by the next attempt). You can't authorize release for Adult Signature packages. The shipper paid extra for ID verification and UPS has to enforce it.

InfoNotice Expiration and Limits

  • InfoNotice validity: The number works for 5 business days after the last delivery attempt
  • Redelivery attempts: Three attempts before automatic hold for pickup
  • Customer Center hold: 5 business days before return to sender
  • Redirect restrictions: The shipper can block all redirects when creating the label

That 5-day Customer Center hold is strict. Day 1 is the day after the third attempt. If the third attempt is Friday, Day 1 is Monday. You have until Friday to pick it up. On Saturday morning it goes back.

I missed the window once on a package from Newegg. It sat at the Customer Center Wednesday through Tuesday (5 business days), returned to sender Wednesday, got back to Newegg the following Monday, and they refunded me. The whole process took 12 days and I never got the graphics card I ordered.

How to Use the InfoNotice Number Online

  1. Go to ups.com/infonotice or open the UPS Mobile App
  2. Enter the InfoNotice number (1R or WN format)
  3. Verify your identity (usually last name and delivery address)
  4. Select your option: redelivery, redirect, hold for pickup, or authorize release
  5. Confirm and save

You get a confirmation email. The driver sees the updated instructions before the next delivery attempt.

The mobile app is faster than the website. The website makes you navigate through four screens to get to the options page. The app goes straight there after you enter the InfoNotice number.

InfoNotice Mistakes People Make

Not Acting Fast Enough

The InfoNotice number expires after 5 business days. If you ignore it, the package returns to sender and you have to contact them to reship it.

Expecting Email Notifications

UPS doesn't automatically email you about InfoNotices unless you signed up for UPS My Choice. The driver leaves the physical slip and that's it. If the slip blows away or someone takes it, you won't know there was a delivery attempt unless you check tracking.

Signing the Slip But Not Being Home

You can't sign the InfoNotice authorizing release and then not be home. The driver needs someone present to hand the package to. The signature just waives the ID requirement for Adult Signature packages. If nobody answers the door, you get another InfoNotice.

Redirecting to the Wrong Address

People redirect to a work address without realizing their office building requires ID to enter or closes at 5:00 PM. The driver shows up at 6:00 PM, can't access the building, leaves another InfoNotice.

I did this with an apartment package once. Redirected to my office. The office building lobby requires keycard access. The UPS driver can't get in without someone meeting him. He left an InfoNotice at the office building front door. I had to redirect it again to a UPS Store.

Assuming All Packages Get InfoNotices

Only signature-required, undeliverable, or problem deliveries get InfoNotices. Regular Ground packages (code 03) without signature get left at your door whether you're home or not. If it disappears, that's porch pirate theft, not a missed delivery.

InfoNotice on Apartments and Businesses

Apartment Buildings

If you live in an apartment, put your unit number in the address. "123 Main St Apt 4B" not just "123 Main St." Without the unit number, the driver leaves the package at the main door or the leasing office if there is one.

Some apartment buildings have package lockers. UPS uses them if the shipper enabled that option. You get an email with the locker code. No InfoNotice needed.

Business Addresses

Businesses close. If your work receives deliveries but closes at 5:00 PM and the driver arrives at 5:30 PM, you get an InfoNotice. Add delivery hours to the address: "XYZ Corp, 123 Main St, Receiving 8AM-5PM."

Some corporate mailrooms sign for everything. Others don't sign for anything. Know your company's policy before shipping to work.

Comparing InfoNotice to Other Carriers

FedEx Door Tag

FedEx uses door tags instead of InfoNotices. The number format is different (usually 12 digits starting with 9622). You manage delivery at fedex.com/doortag. Same concept, different system.

USPS Redelivery

USPS leaves PS Form 3849 ("We ReDeliver For You!") for packages that don't fit in the mailbox or require signature. You schedule redelivery at usps.com/redelivery using the article number (tracking number). USPS doesn't use attempt-specific numbers like UPS.

Amazon Delivery

Amazon Logistics doesn't leave InfoNotices. They take a photo of where they left the package and send it via the app. If they can't deliver, you get an email or app notification with options to reschedule.

What Happens After Three Failed Attempts

After the third delivery attempt, your package automatically goes to the nearest UPS Customer Center. You get an InfoNotice (or should, if the driver remembers) with the Customer Center address and hours.

Finding Your Customer Center

Go to ups.com/locations and search "Customer Center" + your zip code. These are different from UPS Stores. UPS Stores are franchises. Customer Centers are UPS-operated facilities where packages go when drivers can't deliver them.

Customer Centers have limited hours. The one near me: 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM weekdays, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday, closed Sunday. Call ahead to confirm they have your package and check their hours.

What to Bring

You need:

  • InfoNotice slip (if you have it)
  • Valid photo ID matching the delivery name and address
  • Tracking number (in case they can't find it by InfoNotice)

If the package is Adult Signature Required, your ID must show you're 21+. They will not release it otherwise.

InfoNotice FAQs

Q: Can I use an InfoNotice number to track my package?
A: No. InfoNotice numbers only work at ups.com/infonotice for managing delivery options. Use your 1Z tracking number at ups.com/track to see package location.

Q: What if I lost the InfoNotice slip?
A: Check your tracking number at ups.com. The tracking page shows delivery attempt details and usually has a link to enter InfoNotice information. If that doesn't work, call 1-800-PICK-UPS with your tracking number.

Q: Can someone else pick up my package at the Customer Center?
A: Only if you add them as an alternate pickup person through UPS My Choice before the package arrives at the Customer Center. They need to bring their ID and know your tracking number.

Q: How long does redelivery take?
A: Next business day. If you schedule redelivery Monday, they try again Tuesday. Unless it's a weekend - Saturday redelivery costs extra and isn't available for all service codes.

Q: Does authorizing release mean the driver will definitely leave the package?
A: Not if the shipper blocked it. High-value items and Adult Signature packages can't be released via InfoNotice authorization. The delivery requirements are set by whoever shipped it, not by UPS.

Q: Why did I get an InfoNotice when I was home all day?
A: The driver might have knocked softly, rang a broken doorbell, or delivered to the wrong unit in an apartment building. Check your door and nearby areas. Sometimes they leave the InfoNotice but also leave the package somewhere non-obvious like a side door.
