How to prevent package theft: 11 methods that work

Package theft from doorsteps is rising. These prevention methods work, from delivery instructions and lockers to pickup points and cameras.

Package theft is one of the few crimes with a perfect setup: a visible box on an unguarded porch, and a thief who is gone in under ten seconds. Police call it a crime of opportunity, which is good news for you, because crimes of opportunity are preventable. A harder target than the house next door is usually enough.

These methods are ordered roughly from zero-cost to investment. Cheap combinations cover most real-world theft.

1. Use precise delivery instructions

Every major carrier lets you add delivery notes. "Leave at door" is the default and the most exposed option. Instead, specify a spot the street cannot see: behind the gate, inside the porch, beside the garage, with a specific neighbor. Drivers follow these more often than people expect, and it costs nothing.

2. Redirect to a pickup point

This is the single most effective prevention. Lockers (Amazon Hub, parcel lockers from postal services) and retail counters (UPS Access Point, FedEx OnSite, DHL ServicePoint) put the parcel behind a code or a counter. The parcel never spends a second unguarded. Redirecting an in-flight parcel takes minutes on the carrier's site and works even after the first delivery attempt.

3. Require a signature

Signature-on-delivery removes the driver's option to leave the parcel unattended. Shipments with a signature requirement show up in tracking as such, and the driver takes the parcel back to the depot rather than leaving it exposed. Some carriers let you add a signature requirement to an existing shipment at checkout or via the carrier app, sometimes for a small fee.

4. Schedule the delivery

Paying a couple of dollars to pick a delivery window when you are home beats paying nothing and playing the odds. Even a free option many carriers offer, "hold at location" with a release date, converts an unplanned 10 am drop into a planned 6 pm pickup.

5. Use your workplace or a PO box

Employers who accept parcels convert your workplace into the most secure delivery address you own. If that is not an option, a post office box or a private mailbox store gives you a permanent commercial address for your most valuable orders.

6. Actually read the delivery notification

Many thefts happen in the few hours after delivery. The moment a parcel is marked delivered, retrieve it. Most carriers send push notifications or email within minutes of the scan. The gap between "delivered" and "picked up" is the window a thief needs; shrinking it from hours to minutes removes the opportunity most thefts depend on.

7. Make your door visible from the street

This one cuts against intuition. A porch hidden behind a hedge gives the thief cover. Pruned sightlines, a light on a sensor, and a door visible from the street all raise the thief's exposure and lower the appeal of your porch relative to others nearby.

8. A visible camera or doorbell

Cameras do not stop determined thieves, but they clearly deter opportunists, and their footage converts a "claim denied, no evidence" into a quick refund from the carrier or the marketplace. Doorbell cameras are cheap enough now that even the sight of one changes behavior; use a real one anyway, because evidence is the whole point.

9. Track every parcel you are expecting

Waiting for a parcel you forgot you ordered means a box on your porch for a full day before you even know it arrived. Track your parcels on a single dashboard and the awareness gap closes. Add every tracking number, check once a day, and you are never surprised by a delivery.

10. Know your building

In apartment buildings the weak links are specific: an unsecured lobby, a "parcel shelf" by the entrance, a concierge who signs for everything without logging it. Talk to building management about a lockers system or a camera in the parcel area, and if your building has recurring theft, route valuable parcels to a locker from the start.

11. Buy protection where the math works

Shipping insurance and purchase protection on credit cards are worth it for expensive items, not for a $12 phone case. Also worth knowing: many cards quietly include purchase protection that covers theft for 90 to 120 days after purchase. Read your card's benefit guide before paying for insurance you already have.

What actually recovers a stolen parcel

If prevention fails, speed decides the outcome. A police report filed the same day, delivery photos from the carrier, and doorbell footage together turn a "not our problem" into a refund. Most marketplaces resolve these cases in the buyer's favor when evidence exists, and card chargebacks remain the fallback. The detailed recovery walkthrough lives in our guides on packages marked delivered that never arrived and on reporting a missing package.

Frequently asked questions

Do "beware of dog" or "video surveillance" signs work?

Alone, minimally. Combined with a visible camera they raise the perceived risk enough to matter. A sign plus a real camera outperforms either one.

Are package theft insurance policies worth it?

Rarely as a standalone product. The coverage duplicates what many credit cards already include, and the deductible often eats the value of the parcels you actually lose. Read your card benefits first.

Leaving a decoy package on your own porch is legal in most places, and doorbell videos of thieves taking decoys have helped police identify repeat offenders. Anything designed to harm the thief (glitter bombs, dye traps rigged to spray) crosses into booby-trap territory and can expose you to liability. A tracker inside a decoy box that police willingly follow is the sane version of this idea.
